Vanuatu’s airport was quickly opened allowing aide to start to be delivered and holiday makers evacuated.  Reports of the utter devastation are now coming in as news crews are on the ground.

The confirmed death toll has risen to 24, but as yet many of the outer villages have not been reached, with out any communication it is unknown how bad the situation is.  This report from the abc details it more thoroughly http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2015-03-16/all-schools-in-cyclone-devastated-vanuatu-destroyed-damaged-un/6323260.  Vanuatu has a population of 250000.  Flights over the islands have led to estimates that up to 70% of the population has been displaced that is 175000 people.
While it is the rescue of those affected and housing that is immediate need, practically all the nations infrastructure has been destroyed.  Resorts need to be rebuilt in order to get tourism flowing again.  All schools have been destroyed.  The market that sells all the produce is badly damaged, but their no produce to sell as it has all been wiped out.
